Dance Workshops
"MOUSE ON THE MOVE" Dance Workshops.
Why Mouse on the Move???Before I had my electronic communication aid, my cb radio was my main way of interacting with other people. My call sign is "Scouse Mouse". So, when I came to need a name for my dance workshops, I decided to keep the "mouse", and make it "on the move" because that is what I am now, in my life, at long last! and also in my dancing. I think that what I offer is unique. I don't know of anyone else in England or the world, using a communication aid and a wheelchair and leading dance workshops. If you know different, please tell me.
I think that my impairment breaks down all manner of barriers, and that people will work with me, who may be too inhibited to work with a
non disabled dancer. Dance, I believe, is the ultimate way of communicating. Emotions, feelings, moods, even telling stories.
I believe that EVERYONE can dance, and that they benefit in many ways by doing so. I feel that the sort of work I do is almost a new art form.
It is not based on skills, but on feelings and creativity poured directly into expressive dance and movement. People taking part in my workshops will all benefit, by working cooperatively and for the benefit of each other. Above all, I hope it is an enjoyable experience and good fun. I have given dance workshops in schools, and in F.E colleges. I have worked with groups of children and adults outside the school setting, and I have also taken part in workshops led by other groups of disabled people, at my PHAB club, with Independance, and with Candoco.
My own, year long, Millennium award project, was to give workshops culminating in a public performance with a group of people on Wirral. We were of ages from 50+ down to teens. I prefer to give workshops of between one and two hours, with groups of between 10 and 20 people. I need a reasonably roomy space to work in, and need a table for my own use. It is helpful if I know in advance how many of the group use wheelchairs, or have sensory impairments, so that I can prepare appropriately. My primary goal is to ensure that all participants are enabled to take part fully, regardless of disability. If any dancers need a sign language interpreter, or a personal assistant, then they need to provide their own. I have my own public liability insurance."Mouse on the Move" dance workshops are each individually designed for the clients. This is definitely NOT wheelchair dancing, but creative contemporary dance, like no other. The work takes me a long time to prepare, but I really enjoy doing it. The aim of my work is to alter people's perceptions of ability/disability, break down the barriers, and give people pleasure. Workshops can be planned around themes and issues that are particularly relevant or current to the client at the time. For example, primary age children may enjoy a theme about the sea or travel, while secondary age children may benefit greatly from a workshop based around "bullying".
I hope you enjoy taking part as much as I enjoy doing it.
